Government

There are three levels of government in Nova Scotia. They are:

  • Federal Government: Governs all of Canada (also referred to as Government of Canada). The federal government is divided into many departments called Ministries. Each has Canada in its title, such as Canada Post, Transport Canada, etc. The federal government has a toll free telephone number for information on federal programs and services: 1-800-667-3355. You may also visit the government’s website at www.canada.gc.ca.
  • Provincial Government: Governs Nova Scotia. The provincial government is responsible for many important services, such as education and health care. The provincial government toll free number is: 1-800-670-4357. You can also learn more at www.gov.ns.ca.
  • Municipal Government: Each community in Nova Scotia has a municipal government, responsible for local services. These services include garbage collection and recycling, public transportation, and local police and fire services. To find the municipal government in your area, visit Community Profiles.
