What is RSS?

RSS refers to Rich Site Summary (sometimes also called Really Simple Sindication). It is a means for changing content on a variety of different site you subscribe to to be called to your attention as changed occur. This way, you don't have to visit all of the sites individually to see changing content. instead, the changing content, often simply in the form of a text title and summary, is pulled into a program you use to "watch" the channels of content to which you have subscribed.

How is RSS Used?

RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader," "feed reader," or an "aggregator," which can be web-based or desktop-based. These are programs that read a standardized XML file format from the hosting RSS provider that allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. You, as a user of RSS, subscribe to a feed by entering the feed's link into your reader program, or by clicking an RSS icon or link in a browser, which automatically started the subscription process. Your RSS reader checks the your subscribed feeds regularly for new additions and downloads any updates that it finds, providing you with a listing that allows you to monitor and read the feeds.
